About the portfolio class
Our portfolio class is aimed at young people (13yrs and above) who show a keen interest in taking their art further. The class offers a more in depth look at a variety of art techniques with a view to building up an individual portfolio.
This course covers everything from still life, figure drawing / portraits, detailed sketching, perspective, quick sketching, landscapes and works of the imagination.
Portfolio class students will be introduced to a diversity of materials on this course. These are used in a variety of ways with the aim of giving the class members a wide experience in creative drawing and painting. These include
- graphite pencil
- colour pencil
- pen and ink
- charcoal
- pastel
- acrylic painting
- gouache painting
Portfolio classes at the Workshop are useful for those wishing to submit work to Art College or to supplement study currently undertaken. Over the years Jon Hoad has successfully assisted numerous teenagers in their goal of achieving Art College. This includes guidance on selecting work for the portfolio and presentation.
Over the years we have worked with numerous neurodivergent children as well as teenagers with additional support needs. The portfolio class has proved a great place for secondary pupils to tackle their anxiety and relax amongst like minded teenagers.

About the tutor
Jon Hoad has been a professional freelance artist for 30yrs. During this time he has made CD and album covers for various bands, done product artwork with Black & Decker and illustrations for archeological companies amongst other things. His main passion though is Paleontology and paleobotany. Jon Hoad’s work recreating the creatures of prehistory has been featured in the national press and on the National Geographic website.
